FAQ

How do I obtain a quotation and lead time?

All quotations will be provided in writing, based on the information provided. Our best endeavours are made to turn quotations around within 24 hours. The best way to obtain a quotation is email as much information as possible (drawings, photo’s, qty’s etc.) to info@peakpowdercoating.com.au

Why is chemical pre-treatment required for Aluminium?

Mill finish Aluminium needs a chemical etch for powder coat to adhere to the surface. Peak Powdercoating works exclusively with Chemetall who assist with regulating and managing our chemical concentration to maximise performance.

Can you powder coat over corroded Aluminium (exhibiting white rust)?

While powder coat can be applied it is certainly not recommended over white rust. Mill finish aluminium exhibiting white rust/corrosion cannot be chemically pre-treated and may require sandblasting or preferably replacement to maximise the finish/adhesion.

What preparation is recommended for Black or Blue pre-painted Mild steel?

We strongly recommend that all black mild steel is sandblasted to remove millscale and rust, prior to zinc priming and powder coating.

For blue painted mild steel the primer coat should also be removed via manual preparation or sandblasting prior to zinc priming and powdercoating. If the blue painted mild steel primer is not removed it can bleed through lighter colours and also cause the coating to delaminate.

Can you powder coat Galvanised products?

There are two types of Galvanising that we can powder coat.

DuraGal or Pre-Gal – this is straightforward and can be chemically cleaned in our process, primed and powder coated.

Hot Dipped Galvanised (HDG) – this product needs to be degassed and epoxy primed, prior to powder coating. The galvanised surface is commonly rough/textured by nature and this will show through the powder coat surface. Additionally, neither Peak Powdercoating or the powder manufacturers, can guarantee against flaking, chipping and corrosion on this substrate

Can you powder coat stainless steel?

Stainless steel can be powder coated but requires a whip blast first to create a mechanical etch, before being epoxy primed and powder coated.

Can you powder coat over pre-painted materials?

Many pre-painted materials are coated in a ‘wet spray’ or automotive paint. This is not designed to withstand the heat associated with powder coat curing (around 200 degrees Celsius) and will blister, flake and ultimately fail. This should be removed via chemical stripping or sandblasting prior to priming and powder coating.

Can you re-powdercoat items?

Powder coated items can be re-coated, however, the finish can be compromised due to the high build up resulting in ‘orange peel’ and an uneven textures. Additionally, the original pre-treatment process is commonly not known so we cannot guarantee adequate adhesion to the substrate.

Does powder coat stop corrosion?

Powder coat is a permeable surface and is designed to breathe. While it can significantly prevent corrosion in the short term eventually moisture will attack the substrate and cause rust. The addition of proper substrate preparation (either chemical or sandblasting) and appropriate primers will aid in minimising/slowing corrosion.

Can I order custom colours or match to already painted items?

Made to order colours can be sourced, but do have a minimum order quantity and come at a significant premium and delayed lead time over standard powder coat colours. At minimum, the process will generally take between 3 – 4 weeks for samples to be matched, signed off, manufactured and shipped. Peak Powdercoating suggest you contact us to discuss this option first and we can facilitate the process.

Why do I need to provide holes in my products?

All products need to be hung on hooks and jigs so they can powder coated. It is also important that there is adequate drainage holes in materials so that they can dry internally post being pre-treated. Peak Powdercoating can discuss hanging options and the location of holes as the job is being booked in.

What are the biggest products you can powder coat?

On our conveyor line, we can powder coat full Aluminium extrusion lengths up to 6500mm.

In our Batch booth (designed for heavier bespoke items) our booth is 5400mm Long x 2500mm High x 2000mm Wide

Our sandblasting booth can take items up to 5800mm Long x 1500 High x 1500 Wide
